The Upper Irrawaddy: Mandalay to Bhamo
Gorges, teak towns and the river’s wild northern reaches.
Find a Remote River CruiseIrrawaddy River Cruise, Myanmar’s Far North
North of Mandalay, the Irrawaddy narrows and runs through three gorges, known as the defiles, on its way down from Kachin State. For a few years an Irrawaddy river cruise Myanmar travelers could book went up there, from Mandalay to Bhamo near the Chinese border. It was the most adventurous route on the river, and one of the most beautiful.
Status check, October 2026: Burma (Myanmar) is under a U.S. Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory (State Department’s Burma advisory, May 8, 2026). The one Irrawaddy cruise we found on sale from an international operator is Pandaw’s Irrawaddy Delta expedition, restarting in November 2026. Everything else on this site describes routes as they ran before sailings stopped, so you can judge what is worth waiting for.
The Route as It Ran
| Stretch | Highlights |
|---|---|
| Mandalay to Kyaukmyaung | Mingun and its giant bell; pottery villages; the dolphin protection zone begins. |
| The Third Defile | The river narrows between wooded hills above Kyaukmyaung. |
| Katha | A riverside town where George Orwell was posted as a police officer in the 1920s, the setting of his novel Burmese Days. |
| The Second Defile | The most dramatic of the three gorges, where the river runs between sheer, forested cliffs. |
| Bhamo | An old trading town close to the Chinese border. |
What Made the North Special
The northern route felt like a different country from the dry plains around Bagan. Teak forest and bamboo came down to the water, villages were reached only by river, and towns such as Katha kept more of their colonial-era wooden buildings than anywhere further south. Boats moved slowly against the current and anchored at night, and passengers often saw no other foreign visitors for days at a time.
Why It Is Not Sailing
The Upper Irrawaddy depends on high water: in the dry season, shoals make the defiles hard going even for shallow-draft boats, so sailings were seasonal. More importantly, Kachin State and parts of the river corridor north of Mandalay have seen armed conflict for years, and that has intensified since 2021. We have found no Upper Irrawaddy sailings on sale, and we would not expect them to return before the wider situation changes.

Remote River Travel Elsewhere
If the remoteness of the Upper Irrawaddy is what appeals, look at the Brahmaputra in Assam, where small ships sail past river islands, tea estates and Kaziranga National Park (see Brahmaputra River Cruise). On the Mekong, the upper river in Laos between the Golden Triangle and Vientiane is quieter and wilder than the Vietnam–Cambodia stretch.
