The Irrawaddy Dolphin Cruise: What’s Possible

The Irrawaddy dolphin is a small, round-headed dolphin with no real beak, found in coastal waters and a few great rivers of Asia. Its river populations are tiny. An Irrawaddy dolphin cruise is therefore less about a guaranteed show than about luck, patience and a good local guide.

Where the River Dolphins Live

RiverPopulation (approx.)Notes
Irrawaddy, MyanmarAbout 58–72 in a 370 km stretchA 74 km protected zone runs between Mingun and Kyaukmyaung, north of Mandalay.
Mekong, CambodiaAbout 105 (2024)A patrolled stretch from Kratie province toward the Laos border protects them.
Mahakam, IndonesiaAbout 70 in a 420 km stretchEast Kalimantan, Borneo.

Figures are estimates gathered in the Irrawaddy dolphin overview; all three river populations are classed as critically endangered.

Dolphins and Fishermen

Upriver from Mandalay, a few fishing communities have a remarkable relationship with the dolphins. Fishermen tap the side of the boat or the water to signal; the dolphins drive shoals of fish toward the shore, and the men throw their cast nets. Both sides catch more than they would alone. The practice has been passed down for generations and is one reason the protected zone was created.

Other Places to Look

Irrawaddy dolphins also live in brackish lagoons and coastal waters. In India, Chilika Lake on the Odisha coast is well known for boat trips to see them, and some travelers add it to a trip that includes a Ganges cruise from Kolkata. Coastal populations are found from the Bay of Bengal to the Philippines and northern Australia, but sightings anywhere are a matter of patience.

Seeing Them Today: The Mekong at Kratie

With Upper Irrawaddy sailings off sale, the best chance of seeing these dolphins in the wild is on the Mekong near Kratie, in eastern Cambodia, where local boats take small groups out to the deep pools the dolphins use. Kratie lies upstream of Phnom Penh, beyond the stretch most Mekong cruise ships cover, so it usually means a land extension. Our sister site Mekong River Boat Cruises explains the Mekong cruises themselves.

  • Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the water is calm.
  • Choose operators that keep boats at a distance and cut the engine near the dolphins.
  • Bring binoculars; the dolphins surface briefly and quietly.

Dolphin Questions

Can you see Irrawaddy dolphins on a river cruise?

Sightings were possible on Upper Irrawaddy sailings north of Mandalay but never guaranteed. Today the most reliable place is the Mekong near Kratie in Cambodia, usually by small local boat.

Are Irrawaddy dolphins endangered?

Yes. The species is listed as Endangered by the IUCN, and the river populations in the Irrawaddy, Mekong and Mahakam are each considered critically endangered.

Do Irrawaddy dolphins live only in the Irrawaddy?

No. They live in coastal waters and a few rivers across South and Southeast Asia; the Irrawaddy is simply where they were first described.
