The Irrawaddy Cruise, Expedition Style

Most people who book an Irrawaddy cruise picture the Mandalay–Bagan run. This site is about the rest of the river and the boats that explored it: teak riverboats in the spirit of the old Irrawaddy Flotilla, delta creeks, the remote Chindwin, and the gorges north of Mandalay where the river squeezes between cliffs. It is also where we follow Pandaw, the company most closely tied to that kind of travel.

Status check, October 2026: Burma (Myanmar) is under a U.S. Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory (State Department’s Burma advisory, May 8, 2026). The one Irrawaddy cruise we found on sale from an international operator is Pandaw’s Irrawaddy Delta expedition, restarting in November 2026. Everything else on this site describes routes as they ran before sailings stopped, so you can judge what is worth waiting for.

What Makes the Expedition Routes Different

Expedition sailings on the Irrawaddy were defined by small boats and shallow water. Ships drew so little that they could nose into a sandbank and put out a plank; landings were at villages with no jetty and no souvenir stalls. Guides arranged visits to monasteries, schools and workshops on the spot. Days were long and unhurried, and the ship itself — teak decks, cane chairs, open-air dining — was the place to watch the country go by.

That style suits travelers who value the journey more than the checklist, and who are comfortable when plans change with the river level.

Pandaw and the Flotilla Tradition

The Irrawaddy Flotilla Company, founded in 1865, once ran hundreds of paddle steamers and flats on this river. In 1995 the historian Paul Strachan revived the name and began operating riverboats built in the old style, the origin of today’s Pandaw cruises. Pandaw now sails rivers across Southeast Asia and India, and it is the operator bringing passengers back to the Irrawaddy first.

Wildlife on the River

The Irrawaddy is home to one of the world’s rarest freshwater dolphins, which has given its name to the whole species. Our Irrawaddy dolphin cruise page explains where the dolphins live, the famous partnership between dolphins and cast-net fishermen near Mandalay, and why the Mekong in Cambodia is the more practical place to see them today.

Irrawaddy Cruise Questions

What is an expedition Irrawaddy cruise?

A small-ship voyage, usually on a riverboat of 10 to 30-odd cabins, that goes beyond the Mandalay–Bagan highlights: into the delta, up the Chindwin or north through the Upper Irrawaddy defiles, with landings at villages that rarely see visitors.

Who runs Irrawaddy cruises in 2026?

From the international operators, Pandaw is the one with sailings on sale, in the Irrawaddy Delta from November 2026. The big U.S.-market river lines are not selling Myanmar.

Is it Irawaddy or Irrawaddy?

Irrawaddy is the usual English spelling; Irawaddy is a common variant, and Ayeyarwady is the official name in Myanmar today.
