Chindwin River Cruise
The Irrawaddy’s great tributary, toward the Indian border.
Ask Our River AdvisorsThe Chindwin River Cruise: Burma’s Most Remote
The Chindwin is the Irrawaddy’s largest tributary. It rises in the hills of northern Burma, flows south through teak forests and Naga and Chin borderlands near India, and joins the Irrawaddy upstream of Bagan. A Chindwin river cruise was the rarest trip on Burma’s rivers, offered only by a few specialists in high-water months.
Status check, October 2026: Burma (Myanmar) is under a U.S. Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory (State Department’s Burma advisory, May 8, 2026). The one Irrawaddy cruise we found on sale from an international operator is Pandaw’s Irrawaddy Delta expedition, restarting in November 2026. Everything else on this site describes routes as they ran before sailings stopped, so you can judge what is worth waiting for.
Places on the Chindwin
Monywa
A market town near the river’s lower end, close to the Thanboddhay pagoda and the Hpo Win Daung cave temples.
Kalewa
A river town known from the 1942 retreat and 1944–45 campaigns of the Second World War in Burma.
Mawlaik
A former British teak-forestry station with colonial houses in the jungle.
Homalin
Far up the river, close to the Indian border, where few outsiders ever traveled.
The river’s wartime history draws some visitors: the Chindwin was crossed and recrossed by armies during the Burma campaign, and its towns have memorials to that period.
Why It Is a Wet-Season River
The Chindwin is fed by monsoon rains in the hills, so its level swings hugely through the year. Boats could only reach the upper river once the rains had raised it, and timing a Chindwin river cruise was always a matter of reading the season. That unpredictability was part of the attraction, but it also made the river hard to sell.
Today the obstacle is security rather than water: the Chindwin flows through Sagaing Region, one of the areas most affected by the conflict.

Chindwin Questions
Can I take a Chindwin river cruise in 2026?
We have found none on sale. Pandaw does not list the Chindwin among its current routes, and the river runs through Sagaing Region, which has seen heavy fighting since 2021.
When could the Chindwin be cruised?
Only when water levels allowed, which traditionally meant the later months of the wet season. In the dry season the upper river is too shallow for passenger boats.
